Spindle for Traditional Wool Spinning
This spindle design was very common during the Middle Ages and is based on several examples from Birka, Sweden, shaped in the typical conical form of Viking Age clay spindle whorls. However, the Vikings also used spindles with more rounded whorls.
The spindle shaft is made of carefully polished beech wood and has a tapered shape. The spindle whorl is fitted onto the shaft from below. At the upper end, there is a notch for securing the yarn. The spindle whorl is carved from sandstone.
The medieval drop spindle has the following dimensions:
- Spindle shaft: approximately 25 cm
- Spindle whorl (spinning weight): approximately 3.5 × 2 cm
- Whorl weight: between 16 and 27 grams
