This medieval kettle hat, also known as a chapel de fer or capelina, is a reproduction inspired by historical sculptures at Konstanz Cathedral, Germany, depicting guards of the Holy Sepulchre wearing this type of helmet. Its distinctive design, with a wide brim and rounded helmet bowl, offers an excellent combination of protection, comfort and historical authenticity.

This type of helmet, also known as a war hat, appeared in the 13th century and was widely used by infantrymen, archers, crossbowmen and other medieval combatants well into the 15th century. Its broad brim provided effective protection against downward blows and projectiles without restricting vision, hearing or breathing.

This reproduction is made from 1.6 mm steel and features an antiqued finish that gives it an authentic, battle-worn appearance. It has a rounded helmet bowl, a riveted central band with a slight raised ridge, and an approximately 7.5 cm wide brim with a rolled edge. The interior is blackened for improved corrosion resistance and fitted with a riveted, adjustable leather liner, as well as a leather chin strap with a steel buckle.

The model is based on a historical reconstruction inspired by the sculptures of the guards of the Holy Sepulchre in the Rotunda of St. Maurice at Konstanz Cathedral, dating to around 1280. These sculptures are among the earliest visual records of the medieval kettle hat.

This fully wearable medieval helmet is ideal for historical reenactment, LARP, theatre and film productions set in the Middle Ages, as well as for collectors of historical armour and helmets.
