Nålebinding (Danish: literally ‘binding with a needle’ or also naalbinding, nålbinding, nålbindning or naalebinding) is one of the oldest fabric-making techniques developed by humans. The term is also known in English as “single needle knitting.”
The oldest fabric produced with this technique dates back to 6500 BC. C. and was found in the cave of Nahal Hemar, Israel. However, nålbinding was also used during the Viking Age of 793–1066 in Scandinavia before loom weaving or crocheting was known, and this was an effective method of producing durable and useful clothing.
A famous piece of nålbinding is the ‘Coppergate sock’ found during an excavation in the Coppergate area of York. A clear Viking influence on textiles was found in the finds in this area.
