Needle Case Pendant
Replica of a pendant with shape of a needle case, based on an original archaeological find from the Viking Era, found in the Grave 515 from Birka, Sweden. Dated from the 10th century.
The decoration of this piece is unusual. It has four double spirals made with bronze wire, which are attached to the cylindrical tube with round, narrow and cross-weave bronze bands.
These needle cases were part of the women clothing during the Viking Era and, although they could be made of bone or antler, the fact that it was made of bronze indicates the importance of the person who wore it.
It also means the importance of domestic works (like sewing) on their daily life.
This recipient must be used with a bit of virgin wool inside of it, in order to keep the needles attached inside the needle case.
This ornament used to be worn hanging from one of the turtle brooches with a thin chain
Hand-made of bronze.
Measures: 5 x 1.8 x 0.8 cm.
