Replica of the helmet of Yarm, England. Dated from the 10th century.
This helmet was found at Chapel Yard, Yarm, a small town in northeast England. It was displayed for decades at a local museum and, after a long time doubting about its authenticity or its datation, a recent invenstigation led by Chris Caple of Durham University revealed new information about this artifact.
Their conclusion was the “Viking Helmet” of Yarm (as they was popularly known) is an authentic Anglo-Scandinavian helmet, the first ever found in Britain and one of the best well preserved Viking Age helmet found in the world.
This helmet, crowned with a characteristic rounded tip, is made with four pieces of metal joined with riveted bands.
It presents the traditional occularia or mask shaped protection, formed by three different parts and, the same as the original helmet, two occularia pieces riveted together with a nasal piece.
Our helmet is made of 1.6 mm steel. It has also includes an adjustable inner liner made of leather and a leather chin strap with a buckle.
