The Galloway Hoard is widely regarded as the most important Viking Age treasure ever discovered in Britain and Ireland. Buried in the early 10th century, it contains an extraordinary collection of valuable artefacts, some of which were already centuries old when the hoard was concealed.
According to local tradition, the treasure may have been hidden by Viking warriors following a defeat at the hands of the Scots in the Galloway region. Many of the objects are believed to have originated from raids on Anglo-Saxon monasteries and were buried with the intention of being recovered at a later date.
The hoard remained hidden for more than a thousand years until its discovery in 2014 by archaeologist Derek McLennan in south-west Scotland. Among the finds were an ornate Carolingian vessel, hack silver, rune-inscribed arm rings, finely crafted Anglo-Saxon silver brooches, gold jewellery, and luxurious textiles, making the hoard an exceptional source of knowledge about the Viking world.
