The Limons Gold Disc is considered one of the finest masterpieces of Merovingian craftsmanship. Its design depicts the face of Christ at the centre of a cross, surrounded by three wild boars arranged in a circular composition rich in Christian symbolism.
This imagery reflects the teachings of St. Augustine of Hippo, who believed that all creatures, even those regarded as dangerous or harmful, formed part of the beauty and order of God’s creation.
The disc also incorporates several important Christian symbols. Among them is the Chi-Rho Christogram, formed by the Greek letters Χ and Ρ, the initials of Christ. The design further includes the letters Alpha and Omega, symbolising Christ as the beginning and the end, as described in the Book of Revelation.
Traces on the reverse suggest that the original disc was riveted to a rigid backing, possibly made of leather, and may have formed part of a reliquary. Nevertheless, circular brooches of similar size were relatively common during the Merovingian period, making this artefact an exceptional source of inspiration for historical reproductions.
