This splendid 13th century medieval ceramic jug is a jewel from the past, an antique reproduction masterfully made by the potter Santamaría. The historic town of Paterna, Valencia, was a renowned pottery centre in the Middle Ages, known for producing high-quality ceramics that decorated the tables of the nobility and royalty of the time. A witness to centuries of history, this jug reflects the rich tradition and unrivalled artistry of the Paterna potters.

This jug has been moulded using traditional pottery turning techniques, a skill passed down from generation to generation among the potters of Paterna. The process begins with the selection of high-quality local clays, carefully prepared to obtain a fine and homogeneous texture. After shaping, the jug is left to dry in the open air, before being subjected to a first firing in artisanal ovens, where it reaches temperatures of up to 1000°C.

The charm of this piece lies in its exquisite decoration, achieved through the use of natural pigments: The predominant colours in this type of pottery are cobalt blue and copper green, which create beautiful geometric and floral patterns. These pigments, obtained from minerals and plants, were applied with soft-haired brushes to the surface of the jug, before being covered with a transparent varnish that fixed the colours and added a sparkling shine.

This medieval jug is not only a decorative object or an antique, but also a tangible testimony to the skill and creativity of the craftsmen of the time. Ideal for collectors and history lovers, this unique piece is a reminder of the beauty and splendour of 13th-century Valencian pottery.
