Rothenburg “bollock” dagger with leather sheath, late 15th century

The “bollock” dagger, also known as a “ballock” or “kidney dagger,” owes its peculiar name to the two spherical protuberances on its guard, which give it a distinctive appearance. This type of medieval dagger was widely used in Europe from the late Middle Ages through the Renaissance, and continued in modified forms in the British Isles until the 17th and 18th centuries.

Used as a secondary weapon alongside swords or rapiers, it was valued for its narrow, sharp blade, ideal for piercing quilted armor, chain mail, or plate armor seams in close combat. In addition to its role in battle, it was also a status symbol displayed by knights and wealthy citizens due to its elaborate designs.

This design is inspired by an original Northern Italian model, dated between 1450 and 1480, which is part of the Baumann Foundation collection on display at the Rothenburg Museum, Germany. The blade is made of EN45 steel with a diamond section, the carved wooden handle is reinforced with antiqued brass fittings, and the guard features quillons designed to catch enemy blades.

It comes with a tanned leather sheath with brass fittings, ideal as a collector’s item, decorative item, or wardrobe accessory.

Key Features:

Material: EN45 steel, wooden handle, and antiqued brass fittings.

Total length: 39.5 cm; blade: 25 cm.

Weight: approx. 370 g (without sheath), 445 g (with sheath).

The steel requires regular maintenance to prevent rust, recommended with universal oil such as Ballistol.
