This peculiar amulet is a replica of a piece found at the grave 825 from Birka (Björkö), Sweden. Dated from the 10-11th century.
The original was made of silver with the granulation/filigree technique. Our replica, although it’s casted in bronze, shows with accuracy all details of this ancient technique.
Its disc shape with a characteristic central protuberance seems to symbolize a shield with its umbo, although the meaning is unknown, due to this parallelism it could have been created as an amulet for protection.
Measures: 2.6 cm.
