The mortar, a utensil used to grind and mix food, medicines, and pigments, originated in Antiquity: Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans already used versions made of stone or ceramic. During the Middle Ages, it gained great importance in Europe, especially in monasteries and apothecaries, where it served to prepare remedies, spices, and ointments. Medieval mortars were made of bronze, marble, or wood, and were used both in cooking and in alchemy. With the Renaissance, their design became more refined and widely spread. Today, although partly replaced by electric processors, the mortar remains a symbol of traditional and artisanal cooking.
Our mortar is made of beech wood, finely crafted, which makes it as beautiful as functional.
Completely suitable for its use, as it has been treated just with linseed oil.
